Dry Cargo, Dry Container: Managing Humidity Risk on Ceramic Shipments
The Problem: The Ware Survives the Sea; the Box Does Not Always
Open a container that crossed the ocean in the wrong season and you can meet a strange sight: every mug intact, every carton softened at the edges, gift boxes spotted with stains, labels curled. The damage is real and expensive — but it did not happen in the factory, and it did not happen because the ceramics were wet. It happened because a container is a sealed metal box that breathes with the weather: warm humid air loaded at the port, cold nights at sea, and condensation forming on the walls and dripping onto cargo — the phenomenon shippers call container rain. Ceramics themselves are indifferent to moisture; everything around them is not. This guide explains the mechanism briefly and then concentrates on what a buyer can actually specify.

Where This Fits in the Sourcing Chain

Where the Water Comes From
Three sources account for nearly all of it. Hygroscopic cargo and packaging: wood pallets, paper cartons and corrugated dividers hold moisture from the factory environment and release it inside the sealed box. Air trapped at loading: the volume of humid air sealed at the origin port condenses as temperatures swing. Container rain itself: condensation on the roof and walls that drips and re-evaporates through the voyage. The risk is seasonal — cargoes packed through humid summers and shipped into colder routes see the worst of it.
What a Buyer Can Specify
The packing specification is where this risk is actually managed, and four lines do most of the work:
- Desiccants. Container-size desiccant strips or bags hung inside, quantified against voyage length and season — a factory that ships in winter may never have added them, so the requirement must be written, not assumed. They are cheap; the specification line costs nothing and the omission costs a season.
- Inner wrap and liners. Poly-lined cartons or individual poly bags for retail-boxed items keep condensation off printed surfaces. Gift boxes with metallic foil or uncoated paper stock deserve them most — staining shows first on premium packaging.
- Pallet choices. Kiln-dried or plastic pallets carry far less water than fresh wooden ones. Where the destination market requires ISPM-treated wood anyway, asking for dried stock is a small step at packing time.
- Carton quality and stacking. Wet cartons fail from the bottom of the stack up. The compression grade specified for double-stack pallet patterns gives the boxes a margin that survives one wet voyage instead of failing at the first splash.
Receiving, Claims and the Seasonal Clock
Buyers should brief their warehouse to photograph any moisture evidence before unpacking — carton condition, desiccant saturation, staining patterns — because the disposal conversation (sell, clean, discount, claim) depends on that record. And because the risk is seasonal, the specification should be too: many buyers simply make desiccants and poly liners standing requirements for all shipments packed between spring and autumn, and drop the line for winter production. It is one clause in the packing spec, reviewed once a year with the rest of it — and it quietly prevents the ugliest kind of damage claim, the one where the goods are perfect and everything around them is ruined.
