The bamboo is sanded and sealed, and the recess is sized so the base of the mug seats into it rather than resting on the rim.
The lid is machined from bamboo, sanded, and sealed on both faces so it does not take up liquid or stain from coffee rings. The recess on the underside is cut to match the base diameter, which is why the base measurement matters as much as the rim: a coaster that is a millimetre tight will not seat, and one that is loose slides under the mug. The body is glazed glossy and fired, and the facets are checked for flatness because a warped face shows immediately when the mug is set down.
