Buyers use it where a printed logo would wear or look thin. Because the mark is cut into the surface rather than sitting on top of it, the contrast stays crisp after washing, and the design reads as part of the mug rather than a sticker applied to it. The blank is supplied undecorated, so the engraving is done locally, close to the customer.

The body is formed, glazed and fired, then coated on the exterior with a matte black layer that bonds to the glaze during a further pass. The coating is formulated to absorb laser energy evenly, so the engraved area opens up without scorching the surrounding surface. Depth and edge sharpness are set by the engraving file and the machine settings, which stay with the decorator rather than the factory — the factory supplies a consistent blank, and the finish is only as good as the file that reaches the laser.
