Why September Is the Design Month

The spring program ships in March, and everything that happens between now and then has a deadline behind it: the design is locked in September, the samples are approved by December, production runs in January and February, and the cargo leaves before the spring sell-in. Slip the design decision by a month and every step behind it slips too - the sample window shortens, the production window tightens, and the spring program becomes a summer program. This guide covers the September decision list, the approval gates that make the decisions stick, and the freeze rules that protect the schedule.

The September Decision List

The list has five blocks. The shape block: which mugs, bowls, plates and sets the spring program carries, in which silhouettes - the sculptural and asymmetric direction or the classic forms (see our design-trend guide for the 2027 direction). The color block: the base colors and the spring accents, decided against the trend read and confirmed with the lab-dip process (see our color-and-glaze trend and color-control guides). The material block: stoneware, porcelain or bone china for each item, matched to the price point and the channel (see our material guides). The finish block: matte, gloss or reactive, with the tolerance the market accepts (see our glaze guides). And the spec block: the capacities, the dimensions, the packaging (see our sales-packaging guide) - every number that the factory will work from. The rule: September decides the what, October decides the how, November decides the details - the design that is not decided in September is decided by the factory in January.

The Approval Gates

The list only works if the decisions are gated. Gate one is the color approval: the lab dip is approved in writing against the target (see our color-control guide for the acceptance rules) - a color that is not approved in September becomes a bottleneck in December. Gate two is the sample approval: the development sample, the pre-production sample and the shipping sample each clear their gate before the next step (see our sampling and development-process guides for the four sample types). Gate three is the packaging approval: the artwork, the box and the insert are approved on a physical sample (see our sales-packaging guide). The rule: every gate is a written approval with a date - the gate is not the decision, the gate is the proof that the decision was made.

The Freeze Rules

The freeze is what protects the schedule: after the September lock, changes cost time and money, so the change rules are written in advance. A design change after the sample stage requires a new sample and a new approval; a color change after production starts requires a new batch and a price impact (see our change-management guide for the amendment process); a packaging change after the artwork is printed is a reprint. The rule: the September lock is the baseline, and every change after it is an amendment with a written impact statement - the buyers who enforce the freeze are the buyers whose spring programs ship in March instead of May. The September checklist closes with one confirmation: every decision on the list has an owner, an approval date and a document - and that is the file the program runs on for the rest of the year.
