Product Page Content for Ceramic: Five Blocks That Prevent Returns

Oct 17,2026

Returns Are Usually a Content Problem

A customer buys a mug expecting 350 ml and receives 300. Or expects it to be dishwasher safe and it clouds after twenty cycles. Or expects a lid that seals and gets one that rests on top. In each case the product did what it was made to do; the page said something else.

For a distributor or a retailer, the product page is the specification the end customer actually reads. It deserves the same care as the drawing.

Block 1 — Dimensions and Capacity, With the Method

Numbers without a measurement method are opinions.

  • Capacity in millilitres, and whether it is the brim capacity or the working capacity. They differ, and the difference is what generates complaints.
  • Height, top diameter and base diameter, because customers check whether it fits a cupboard and a cup holder.
  • Weight, because it predicts how the mug feels and whether the parcel will be economical.
  • Wall and rim thickness where they materially affect the experience — a thin rim and a thick rim are different products.
  • The measurement basis: measured on a fired piece, and how capacity was filled. Stating the method prevents a comparison with a competitor's differently measured number.

Block 2 — Material and Finish

  • The body named — porcelain, stoneware, earthenware — rather than "high quality ceramic".
  • The decoration position — underglaze, in-glaze or on-glaze — because it determines how the piece ages in a dishwasher.
  • The finish, matte or gloss, and whether the matte finish marks with cutlery (customers notice, and it is better said in advance).
  • The foot, glazed or unglazed, because an unglazed foot can mark a delicate table surface.

Block 3 — Care and Use Limits

This is where most claims are created by omission. State the limits, plainly:

  • Dishwasher: safe, or hand wash only, and to what cycle count the decoration was tested.
  • Microwave: safe only if it was tested for it. A metal decoration or a metallic rim is a real hazard, not a marketing nuance.
  • Oven and freezer: usually no, and saying so prevents a failure that looks like a defect.
  • Thermal shock: whether pre-warming is recommended, and whether pouring boiling water into a cold thick-walled mug is outside the intended use.
  • Abrasive cleaners: which ones remove the decoration.

Block 4 — Compliance and Safety

  • The food-contact declaration that applies, and the market it covers.
  • Test references where the market requires them — with the item or batch reference, not a generic certificate.
  • Age or use warnings where they apply, such as a small-parts or hot-liquid caution.
  • Do not overclaim. "Microwave safe" on an untested item is not a marketing line; it is a liability.

Block 5 — What Is in the Box and How It Arrives

  • The set contents — one mug, two mugs, mug plus lid, mug plus saucer.
  • Whether the gasket is fitted or supplied separately.
  • The packaging type, because a customer buying a gift needs to know whether it comes in a gift box.
  • Replacement parts availability, which is a reason to buy rather than a detail.

Photography That Answers Questions

Five images do most of the work:

  1. A scale reference — a hand, or a familiar object, so size is understood without reading.
  2. The interior, showing the base and the inside wall, because customers look inside.
  3. The rim in close-up, because it is what the lip touches.
  4. The base and foot ring, which answers the table-scratch question.
  5. The handle in use, and the piece stacked or with its lid, which answers the practical questions.

A pack shot on white is necessary but not sufficient; it answers no questions.

Copy Rules

  • Numbers instead of adjectives. "350 ml, 92 mm high, 340 g" beats "generous capacity".
  • State the limit rather than hiding it. A stated limitation creates trust; a discovered one creates a return.
  • One sentence per question. Buyers scan; they do not read paragraphs looking for a dimension.
  • Keep the specification sheet as a separate document that a distributor can pass to a retailer. The page is for customers; the sheet is for the trade.

What to Put on the Page

  • Capacity with the measurement basis, and the three key dimensions.
  • The body and decoration position, named.
  • Care limits stated, including what is not safe.
  • Food-contact and test references, without overclaiming.
  • Box contents and packaging type.
  • Five photographs, each answering a specific question.

The packaging guide explains how retail-ready and protective layers are specified together.

The Habit That Ties It Together

The habit is to write the page as if the customer will return the product if it did not answer. Because they will.
