Live Selling: What a Ceramic Product Has to Do on Camera

The Problem: A Channel That Judges the Product Differently

Live selling does not evaluate a ceramic the way a retail buyer does. There is no shelf, no packaging in the shopper's hand, and no time to read a specification. There is a presenter, a camera, and a few seconds in which the product has to look worth buying. That changes the requirements: the product must demonstrate, it must survive being handled repeatedly on camera, and it must be cheap enough to discount live and light enough to ship as a single parcel. Buyers in this channel are not looking for the most refined product; they are looking for the one that performs in a 40-second demonstration and arrives intact three days later.

Where This Fits in the Sourcing Chain

The demand is for stability rather than novelty: one specification, held, in volume. The spec freeze guide explains how artwork and packing files are locked between orders. And because live commerce ships direct to consumers, the packaging job is a parcel job rather than a pallet job. The packaging guide explains how retail-ready and protective layers are specified together. The full chain follows the standard sourcing map. See the full ceramic sourcing process map.

What Demonstrates Well

Four ceramic behaviours translate into a live sale. A visible transformation — a colour-changing surface that reveals an image with hot water, or a reactive glaze that shifts as it catches the light. Sound and feel — the ring of a well-fired piece, the weight in the hand, which a presenter can convey in a sentence. Stacking and set structure, where the demonstration of four pieces nesting is itself the argument for the price. Pour and capacity, for jugs, pitchers and large-format cups, because a pour is a demonstration.

What does not work: subtlety. Fine relief, delicate thin rims and quiet colour differences do not survive video compression, and a product that cannot be seen cannot be sold this way.

The Commercial Structure

Live channels think in a ladder: a hero item that carries the session, one or two mid-price items, and a low-price item that converts the audience. The supplier's job is to provide a body that can serve all three positions through decoration and packaging rather than through three separate moulds — which is also what makes the volume predictable.

The Supply Discipline That Wins the Account

Three requirements recur. Consistent yield, because a live seller cannot explain a shortage. A stable specification, because the channel's repeat customer is buying the same product again. Parcel-grade packing, usually a single-wall carton with an insert sized to a common postal band, so that the unit economics hold after shipping. A supplier who can hold those three across a season will be reordered; one who cannot will be replaced at the next session.

The Ordering Rhythm

Live selling is continuous, with pronounced peaks around major shopping events. The practical arrangement is a rolling call-off against a reserved capacity, booked some months ahead so that the peak period does not collide with other buyers' production. Because the specification is fixed, the reservation can be made on a form and a decoration rather than on a design, which is what makes the channel compatible with a factory calendar.

The Habit That Ties It Together

The habit is to ask how the product will be shown, not only how it will be made. Programs that do this supply a product with something to demonstrate. Programs that do not send a beautiful mug to a channel that needs a visible trick — and watch it go unsold on camera.
