Hong Kong Gifts and Premium Fair: The Calendar Argument for Ceramics

Oct 18,2026

A Fair Is Also a Deadline

The HKTDC Hong Kong Gifts & Premium Fair runs at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 27 to 30 April 2027, with online business matching from 20 April to 7 May and the sourcing platform open from 27 March to 26 May 2027. The 2026 edition drew 3,520 exhibitors from 19 countries and regions and 32,322 physical buyers from 125, according to HKTDC's published figures.

Most visitors read those dates as a diary entry. For a ceramic buyer, they are something more useful: a deadline disguised as an appointment.

The Arithmetic Nobody Does in April

Work backwards from the shelf:

  • Christmas stock is on shelf in September and October.
  • Which means it arrives at a retailer's distribution centre in August.
  • Which means it leaves the factory in June or July.
  • Which means production is June to August, and the factory slot must be booked before then.
  • Which means the specification and the sample must be approved by May.

An April fair is therefore the last point at which a buyer can meet a new ceramic supplier, see a finish in the hand, and still have a comfortable Christmas programme. Wait until June and you are not buying a programme; you are asking whether anything is left.

What the Fair Is Good At

  • Giftware breadth. Premiums, promotional gifts, packaging-led ranges — the channel logic is visible in one hall.
  • Finishes in the hand. Matte, reactive, metallic, decal under glaze. The difference between two similar photographs is obvious in a hand.
  • Packaging as part of the product. Gift boxes, display cartons and retail-ready presentation are central here in a way they are not at a general trade show.
  • The gift channel's volumes. Smaller and more seasonal than hospitality, which changes what a sensible specification looks like.

The Online Window Matters More Than It Used To

HKTDC's sourcing platform opens in late March, three to five weeks before the physical show, and stays open into late May. Used properly, that changes the trip:

  • Qualify before you fly. Send the spec sheet in March; get process specifications back; shortlist three or four.
  • Book meetings, not stands. The physical days are for the hand and the eye, not for introductions.
  • Use the post-show window (to 26 May) to close the sample question while the conversation is warm.

We Do Not Take a Stand

For clarity: we do not exhibit at the fair either. Our model is a programme with a factory partner in Liling, built on a specification and a retained sample rather than a display piece.

That has a practical consequence for a buyer attending: the useful thing we can offer is not a stand visit but the three items a stand cannot provide — a production-piece sample with a date, a written process specification, and a factory visit.

A Buyer's Sequence

March (online)

  • Send the spec sheet and the volume range.
  • Request a process specification and a production-piece sample.
  • Shortlist to three or four candidates.

April (physical)

  • Compare finishes in the hand, with the same light and the same reference object.
  • Ask the five questions: which body, which forming method, is firing in-house, where is decoration done, can you send a retained sample.
  • Do not agree a price on the floor.

May (post-fair window)

  • Approve a sample in writing against a physical reference.
  • Reserve the production slot, before the June order season closes it.
  • Freeze the artwork — that is the date the whole Christmas programme depends on.

What Makes a Gift Programme Different

  • Seasonality is harder. One window, no reorder.
  • Packaging carries more of the value — the gift box is part of what the customer bought.
  • Quantities are smaller and more varied, which makes the per-design minimum the binding constraint rather than the total volume.
  • Colour and trend matter more than durability claims, though neither can be skipped.

What to Put in the Gift Programme Plan

  • The retail date, and the DC date it implies.
  • The drop-dead date for artwork, worked back from the shelf.
  • A production slot reserved before June.
  • The packaging specification, because it is part of the product here.
  • The per-design minimum, since gift quantities are smaller.
  • A written sample approval, against a physical reference.

The packaging guide explains how retail-ready and protective layers are specified together.

The Habit That Ties It Together

The habit is to read a fair date as a production deadline. April is not early for Christmas; it is the last comfortable month.
