Decoration Methods Explained: Decal, Screen Print, Hot Stamp and Hand Paint
The Decoration Is the Differentiation
On a blank mug, every brand looks the same - the decoration is where the product becomes yours (see our mold-ownership guide for the design-protection side). But the decoration methods are not interchangeable: each one has a different cost, a different fidelity, a different durability and a different minimum quantity, and the method that works for a 5,000-piece promotional run may be wrong for a 500-piece gift line (see our first-order guide for the quantity logic). This guide maps the four main methods - decal, screen print, hot stamp and hand paint - and the decision rules for choosing between them.

Decal: The Full-Color Workhorse
Decal printing transfers a printed image onto the glaze - the standard for full-color patterns, photographs, gradients and the complex multi-color artwork: high fidelity, cost-effective at volume, and durable when fired under the glaze or fixed with an overglaze firing (see our kiln guide for the double-fire structure). The trade-offs: the setup cost (the decal printing and the firing passes) favors volume, the fine detail is excellent, and the decal is the method behind most branded and themed programs (see our promotional and gift guides for the programs). When you see a mug with a full-color photo or a complex pattern, you are looking at decal.
Screen Print and Hot Stamp: The Graphic Specialists
Screen printing pushes ink through a mesh stencil onto the surface - the method for clean flat graphics: logos, text, simple two- or three-color designs, and the solid bands and blocks. It is cheaper per piece than decal at medium volume, it reproduces flat colors very well, and it suits the graphic-led programs (see our color-control guide for the color-matching side). Hot stamping presses a metallic foil onto the surface with heat and pressure - the gold, silver and bronze effects behind the premium and gift lines: the single-color metallic accent, the logo, the border line. The trade-offs: screen print is limited to flat graphics (no photographic gradient), hot stamp is a single metallic color per pass and adds a premium feel with a modest cost lift. The rule: screen print for the flat graphic volume, hot stamp for the metallic accent.
Hand Paint and the Craft Premium
Hand painting puts a brush on every piece - the artisan method behind the hand-painted, overglaze and folk-art lines (see our craftsmanship guides): every piece is individual, the output is low, the cost is the highest, and the variation is the story. The trade-offs mirror hand throwing (see our forming guide): the craft premium and the uniqueness come at the price of volume and consistency - a hand-painted program sells the maker, not the batch. The rule: hand paint for the craft and gift lines that price the story; decal and screen print for the programs that need the reproduction.
The Decision Rules
The method is chosen by four questions. The artwork: a photographic full-color image needs decal; a flat logo needs screen print; a metallic accent needs hot stamp; a one-of-a-kind craft look needs hand paint. The quantity: the setup-heavy methods (decal, hot stamp) reward volume; the labor-heavy method (hand paint) works at low volume (see our cost-model guide for the math). The durability: underglaze decal and fired methods survive the dishwasher; the unfired and metallic finishes need the care instructions stated (see our test-report guide for the compliance side of the finishes). And the budget: the quotation should itemize the decoration as its own line (see our quote-reading guide). The buyers who choose the method by the artwork and the quantity are the buyers whose decoration reproduces as designed - and whose cost matches the quote.
